On October 5th, 2018, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the winners to Peace Nobel Price.
The Portuguese Human Rights League – Civitas, would like to congratulate Dr. Denis Mukwege (gynecologist from Congo, 63 years old) and Ms. Nadia Murad (activist of the Yazidi Human Rights, 25 years old) for the prize and the cause they fight against: the end of sexual violence as a weapon in war conflicts.
Dr. Mukwege worked for many years in a hospital in Bukavu (a border city near Ruanda) at the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a country stricken by a civil war that has already caused more than 6 million deceased. Throughout his career and during 12 years of civil war, he treated more than 21.000 women victims of rape.
Ms. Murad was kidnaped by the terrorist group of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in August of 2014 and subject to rape and other abuses. After 3 months of captivity she managed to flee in November 2014 to a refugee camp in the North of the country and then to Stuttgart, Germany. At the age of 23, she was appointed as the first United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking.
